Why should I vaccinate my pet?

There are lots of nasty diseases out there! Some of these can cause pain and distress and in some cases can even be fatal. Vaccination is the best way to protect your furry friend against specific diseases

What is a vaccine and how does it work?

Vaccines are one of the most common procedures we carry out at our practices. It’s quick and simple and what’s more, at the time of vaccine your pet will receive a full health check examination by our vets.

A vaccine is usually given by an injection under the skin, although some vaccines are given as drops into the nose. It contains small controlled quantities of the virus and is designed to stimulate an immune response that will protect your pet against the disease. If your pet then comes into contact with one of the diseases, its immune system will recognise it and already have the antibodies in place needed to fight it.

Dog Vaccinations

At Companion Care, vaccinations can protect your dog against the following diseases:

  • Canine Parvovirus normally known as Parvo
  • Canine Infectious Hepatitis
  • Distemper
  • Leptospirosis
  • Kennel Cough
  •  Rabies

How often should I vaccinate my pet

As a general rule we recommended your pet is vaccinated every year. However all pets differ slightly so your vet might not always vaccinate your pet for all the diseases every year. There are a number of things that can influence this including health status, breed, age, lifestyle, environment and travel habits. Your vet will work with you to determine which vaccines are appropriate to keep your pet happy and healthy.

Rabbit Vaccinations

At Companion Care, vaccinations can protect your rabbit against the following diseases:
  • Myxomatosis Rabbit
  • Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD)
