Lucky Escape for Dora!
Dora, a 1 year old male domestic short hair cat, was brought to the surgery by his owners as they thought he had been hit by a car. All his claws were shredded (a common sign of a road traffic accident), but the only obvious injury was a small puncture wound on his nose. He also had bruising on his hard and soft palates (the top and bottom of the inside of his mouth), and his right canine tooth was broken.
We did not take out the fractured tooth straight away as we wanted to monitor him for any deterioration before giving him an anaesthetic, but it became clear that Dora was not getting better. His breathing was getting worse so our vet Jason decided to anaesthetise him and take chest x-rays. The x-ray clearly showed a foreign body (something that shouldn't be there!) in his windpipe. He immediately underwent an endoscopy and the foreign body was removed - to our great surprise it was actually an airgun pellet which appears to have gone through the nose, through the tooth and then accidently been inhaled into the windpipe!
Happily Dora has made a full recovery and is back to his normal self again, but he has certainly used up one of his nine lives!
